Hamilton Harbour has welcomed a series of tall ships over the past two weeks, with three historic European vessels stopping in Bermuda.
The visits began with the German tall ship Gorch Fock, which was seen in Hamilton in late May, followed by the French tall ship Belle-Poule. The Portuguese tall ship NRP Sagres then arrived in Bermuda on June 10, coinciding with Portugal Day.
The Gorch Fock, a German Navy training ship built in 1958, is one of the best-known modern tall ships, with Sail Training International noting that the vessel has completed numerous voyages during its service.
The Belle-Poule, constructed in 1932 in Fécamp for the French naval academy, is used for training midshipmen in open-sea sailing and navigation. Its arrival added another touch of classic maritime beauty to Hamilton Harbour.
The most recent visitor, NRP Sagres, is one of Portugal’s most recognised maritime symbols. The vessel was built in 1937 at the Blohm & Voss shipyards in Hamburg and was incorporated into the Portuguese Navy as a school ship in 1962.
Each of the ships docked in Bermuda’s capital city of Hamilton.
