Crowds lined Front Street in Hamilton earlier this week in order to celebrate the arrival of the America’s Cup, following the long-awaited announcement that Bermuda has been selected to be home of the elite sailing competition in 2017.
The trophy itself arrived in Bermuda on board a private jet earlier in the day, and was driven in a motorcade to the Cabinet Office grounds, where people gathered to get a glimpse of the hardware, considered the oldest trophy in international sport.
Following the initial viewing, Front Street played host to a party that involved the arrival of the trophy, speeches from local dignitaries, the Bermuda Regiment Band, the island’s iconic Gombeys, music, and a fireworks display.
