With her radiant beauty and confident presence, Margaret Hill gave Bermuda a proud moment on the international stage when she was named Miss Photogenic at the 1970 Miss Universe Pageant.
The Bermudian beauty travelled to Miami Beach, Florida, after being crowned Miss Bermuda and represented the island at the prestigious international competition.
Hill’s striking appearance captured the attention of photographers and the international press, and she was ultimately awarded the Miss Photogenic title.
Her achievement was especially significant, as she became one of the first Black women to receive one of the titles presented at the Miss Universe Pageant — a milestone for representation at a time when Black women were still rarely recognised by major international beauty competitions.
The 1970 Miss Universe crown was won by Puerto Rico’s Marisol Malaret, while Hill’s Miss Photogenic honour ensured that Bermuda also enjoyed a memorable place in the spotlight.
More than five decades later, the footage remains a beautiful reminder of a Bermudian woman who turned heads, broke barriers and carried the island’s name with elegance on one of the world’s biggest pageant stages.
