New Road Sign Honours Iconic Hendrickson Family

The Hendrickson family has been honoured with the naming of ‘Hendrickson’s Way,’ commemorating its enduring contribution to Bermuda’s Gombey tradition and the cultural life of the Glebe Road community.

The road sign was officially unveiled along a section of Glebe Road in Pembroke, creating a permanent public reminder of the family’s generations-long connection to Gombey music, dance and community.

Members of the family and the wider community attended the ceremony alongside Minister of Tourism & Transport, Culture & Sport Owen Darrell, Minister of Youth, Social Development & Seniors Tinee Furbert, Pembroke East Central MP Michael Weeks and Director of the Department of Culture Carlita Lodge.

The gathering concluded with the official unveiling of Hendrickson’s Way.

The official traffic notice states that the signage is “in memory of the late Lawrence ‘Stickers’ Hendrickson Sr., Lawrence ‘Stickers’ Hendrickson Jr., Carolyn Hendrickson, and Zaniko Hendrickson. A section of Glebe Road will have the sign displayed Hendrickson’s Way. The address on the Road will remain the same.”

Minister Darrell reflected on the family’s presence in the neighbourhood and the role they have played in Bermuda’s cultural story.

“The Hendrickson family has been part of this community for generations. Their drums have been part of the soundtrack of this neighborhood, their dance is part of this rhythm, and their home right behind us has been a gathering place for family, culture and community. The Hendrickson name is deeply connected to Bermuda’s Gombey tradition,” he said.

The new sign puts an official name to a connection that has existed for generations, recognising the Hendrickson family’s contribution while celebrating the music, movement and community bonds at the heart of Bermuda’s Gombey heritage.
