On this day in 2013, Bermuda’s women’s football team delivered one of the island’s most dramatic sporting moments, capturing the Island Games gold medal after a penalty shootout victory over Greenland.
It was the first of what would become three Island Games gold medals for the Bermuda women team, all under coach Naquita Robinson.
The final, played on home soil on July 18 2013, remained goalless, leaving the title to be decided from the penalty spot. Bermuda goalkeeper Stacy Babb produced two vital saves to seal the victory and spark jubilant celebrations as players and supporters rushed onto the field.
A decade later, the team returned to the top of the podium at the 2023 Island Games in Guernsey and then successfully defended their title at the 2025 Island Games in Orkney, securing their third gold medal after another nerve-racking final decided by penalties; with both 2013 and 2025 seeing double gold wins by Bermuda as the men’s football team also claimed gold.
