“Today we are here to commemorate that glorious moment when Clarence Hill put tiny Bermuda on the Olympic map,” Minister of the Cabinet Office Wayne Furbert said as commemorative posters featuring Mr Hill were unveiled at the Post Office in Hamilton.
Minister Furbert said, “I want to welcome you all here today for this momentous occasion, and I especially welcome Mr. Clarence Hill, Bermuda’s first ever Olympic Games medal winner.
“Today, we are here to commemorate that glorious moment when Clarence Hill put tiny Bermuda on the Olympic map by winning a Bronze medal in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games. In doing so, Clarence Hill etched his name in the annals of Bermuda’s sporting history and forever became a global icon for us.
“In recognizing Clarence Hill’s outstanding achievement 46 years ago, we thank him for being a wonderful ambassador for our country. We honor him today for that achievement with the unveiling of two posters that capture the essence of that stunning moment when Clarence Hill brought the world’s attention on Bermuda.
“I want to thank the Postmaster General, for organizing the posters for today’s event. Mr. Hill, on behalf of the government and people of Bermuda, I am pleased to unveil these posters in honour of your historic Olympic achievement,” the Minister said, as he unveiled the images, which are from the Royal Gazette’s archives.
Mr. Hill thanked the Government, saying, “I appreciate what they are doing.”
Mr Hill won a bronze medal in the 1976 Olympic Games, giving Bermuda the distinction of being the smallest nation to medal at a Summer Olympics, a record we held for 45 years.
