New Airport To Have Three New Restaurants

Whistling Rum Bar & Grill, Rock & Barrel Gastro Bar and the Heron & the Sea Public House are the names of the three new eateries that will be available at Bermuda’s new airport terminal when it opens in 2020.

Skyport announced Bermuda Travel Concessions has been awarded the food and beverage concession in the new state-of-the-art terminal and plans are in place to create three uniquely distinct eateries with Bermudian themes throughout.

Bermudians Dennie O’Connor and Jennifer Turini Ysseldyke have partnered with SSP America, one of the world’s leading airport food and beverage operators, to create Bermuda Travel Concessions.

Aaron Adderley, President, Skyport, says: “It was important for us to introduce an innovative dining concept for the new passenger terminal building.

“We were pleased to see two young Bermudians team up with the world’s largest food and beverage operator to form Bermuda Travel Concessions.

“They both have a proven track record in delivering successful restaurant and entertainment experiences, and this partnership is an ideal outcome. We look forward to welcoming next year, travellers and members of the community to enjoy the elevated offerings.”

Skyport explained, “The new restaurants are: The Whistling Rum Bar & Grill, Rock & Barrel Gastro Bar and The Heron & the Sea Public House. Full dining, as well as Grab ‘n’ Go options will be available at each location.

“The Whistling Rum Bar & Grill will add to the restaurant selections in the east end. It is located before the check-in area and will feature a full-service outdoor patio offering an exceptional al fresco dining experience.

“While inside a modern, vibrant landside bar and grill will be available to serve passengers, airport staff and members of the community with tasty options including jerk roasted chicken, fish tacos, fish chowder and warm rum cake. Also featured will be a line-up of cold beers, international wines and sparkling wines as well as a menu with signature cocktails.

“In the US Departures lounge, passengers will be able to enjoy food and drinks at Rock & Barrel Gastro Bar – a restaurant with spectacular views over the runway and Ferry Reach.

“Featuring design elements that draw inspiration from the natural woods, stones and turquoise waters of the island while blending in an eclectic industrial vibe, this restaurant will be a hip, buzzing, full-service gastro bar with signature Bermudian cocktails, local and international brews and freshly prepared island dishes.

“As the piece de resistance, US travel bound passengers will have the option to sit outside and enjoy the gorgeous views and cool breeze from an open-air full-service patio.

“Finally, the sophisticated and stylish Heron & the Sea will be the main dining option in the International Departures area, inviting guests to enjoy a deeply stocked cellar, global brews and classic Bermudian cocktails in a pub-influenced setting.

“Bermudian inspired dishes with a focus on seafood will also be offered including fish chowder, seared George Bank scallops, blackened wahoo and shrimp kebabs with guava BBQ sauce.”

Kyle Phillips, Senior Director of Business Development, SSP America, says: “The Bermuda L.F. Wade International Airport team sought an elevated experience for its passengers, and SSP America answered the call.

“Our strategy was to deliver the ‘taste of place’ for which we’re known, as well as unsurpassed operational know how. We’re looking forward to being part of the BDA Airport community.”

“There will also be a market-style convenience store in the arrivals public meet and greet area for those coming in from late flights, offering quick bites and coffee to go.”

Mr O’Connor, Co-owner of Beach Boys Ltd, says: “This opportunity for us is exciting, motivating, and surreal. We are grateful for Skyport’s ability to see that Bermudian driven food and beverage culture and hospitality, coupled with the experience and expertise of an international company like SSP, will result in the highest standards and outcomes for a successful concession.

“We are also grateful for SSP’s commitment to collaborate and invest in Bermuda and its people. This collaborative effort gives us a chance to enhance our offerings, bolster the tourism industry, and provide excellent employment opportunities for Bermudians.”
