Two Publications Call Bermuda The “Best”

Bermuda’s allure has lead it to be named to two distinctive lists recently, with Condé Nast Traveler readers ranking us as one of the best islands in the world, and Lonely Planet including the island in its “Best in Travel 2017 Top Countries” list.

The entry in the Condé Nast Traveler’s 2016 Readers’ Choice Awards, which called us a “melting pot of British, American, and Caribbean cultures,” is the culmination of more than 300,000 travelers submitting millions of ratings and over 75,000 comments to help them create a list of winning favorites.

In describing Bermuda, the publication said, “Though this small island sits in the North Atlantic, its climate is decidedly subtropical.

“A British Overseas Territory, Bermuda is a melting pot of British, American, and Caribbean cultures, and offers tons of things to do: snorkeling near pink-sand beaches, golfing, shopping, museum hopping, and more.

“Pro tip: Bermuda is riddled with watery underground caverns, its most famous being the Crystal and Fantasy Caves. Tours take you on a walkway over eerily clear water, with pale stalactites hanging overhead. One of the site’s first visitors? Mark Twain.

“Getting there: There are direct flights to Bermuda from eight cities on the East Coast, including New York, Atlanta, and Miami [2 to 3 hours].”

Meanwhile, the Lonely Planet distinction hailed Bermuda as one of the “ten destinations you cannot afford to miss.”

Lonely Planet, which listed us sixth on the list, said, “The British territory of Bermuda is often mistaken for a Caribbean island, and those in the know might not correct the misunderstanding, in order to keep the place to themselves a little longer.

“Just 1050 kilometres off the coast of North Carolina, Bermuda is reachable from most major east-coast US cities in around two hours – a quick hop will get you a bit of Britain mixed with island flair.

“In June Bermuda will host the America’s Cup, where the US will defend its title. Temperate climates and favorable winds make Bermuda the perfect location for this historic sailing race – and for your next trip.”
