Bermuda Following UK Sanctions On Russia

In response to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, many countries have introduced a wide range of sanctions against the Russian Federation, and Bermuda is following the sanctions placed by the UK.

This was explained by the island’s Premier David Burt who said, “In response to the Russian military invasion of Ukraine, many countries including the United Kingdom, have introduced a wide range of sanctions against the Russian Federation.

“Once implemented, UK sanctions are applicable in Bermuda as an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom.”

While Bermuda is self-governing and elects our own representatives, we are not an independent country and according to the island’s Constitutional Order the British appointed Governor maintains responsibility for four areas; “external affairs; defence, including armed forces; internal security; the police.”

Other Territories, such as the Cayman Islands, are also following the UK sanctions.

The UK joins numerous other allies around the world such as the US, Canada, Switzerland and the EU in imposing the sweeping sanctions.
